Why You Should Not Add Intel Product Revenue to Foundry Revenue

Understand internal transactions between Intel's product and foundry businesses when reading consolidated results. Separate manufacturing losses, external customer revenue, and the timing of investment and depreciation.

Intel's product business revenue and foundry revenue must be viewed on a consolidated basis after eliminating internal transactions. Simply adding the value of manufacturing performed by the foundry for Intel's product business overstates actual sales to external customers. Progress in manufacturing competitiveness and a recovery in product sales also require different indicators.

Do not mistake internal manufacturing transactions for external revenue

Intel's official earnings releases present its product businesses and Intel Foundry alongside intersegment eliminations. Under this structure, foundry segment revenue growth can also be influenced by changes in internal product mix or transfer pricing. It is important to distinguish an announcement that an external foundry customer has been secured from revenue actually recognized from that customer. Design wins, trial production, volume production contracts, and revenue recognition are different events, so record the evidence and timing for each stage separately.

Assess product competitiveness and manufacturing economics separately

Examine PC and data center products through sales volume, average prices, and product mix. For manufacturing, check how production utilization, process transition costs, and yield improvements affect costs. Even if a new process meets its technical targets, its economics may improve slowly without sufficient volume. Conversely, larger losses caused by initial costs do not immediately establish that technical development has failed. Recording technology timelines alongside the conditions needed for earnings improvement provides a more accurate view.

Factory spending and expenses hit at different times

Capital expenditures appear in investing cash flows, while assets available for use are subsequently expensed through depreciation. The year of heavy cash spending may therefore differ from the year when the earnings burden increases. If government support or co-investment arrangements are involved, distinguish total project costs, the company's share, and cash inflows. Read impairments and restructuring separately from recurring production costs, but do not simply dismiss them as one-time items if they keep recurring. Before comparing growth rates, also check whether divestitures changed the scope of consolidation.

Worked example

Hypothetical example: With product revenue of 130, foundry revenue of 45, other revenue of 5, and intersegment eliminations of 43, consolidated revenue is 130+45+5−43=137. Omitting eliminations overstates it at 180. Treating all 45 of foundry revenue as external revenue also misrepresents the customer base. In an actual report, examine how revenue and profit eliminations are presented separately; do not apply the revenue elimination directly to operating losses.

What to check

  • Have you included intersegment revenue eliminations?
  • Have you distinguished external customer contracts from recognized revenue?
  • Have you assessed process progress separately from manufacturing profit improvement?
  • Have you checked for changes in consolidation scope caused by divestitures?
